Transfer of undertakings (TUPE)

The purpose of the TUPE regulations is to provide protected employment rights to employees when their employer changes as a result of a transfer, where services are outsourced, brought in-house, or assigned to a new contractor.


Its effect is to move employees (and any liabilities associated with them) from the old employer to the new employer, with continuity of service preserved and some protection of existing terms and conditions of employment.
