Writing the advert - managers guidance

The purpose of the advert is to enable applicants to decide if they are suitable for the job and if the job is suitable for them.

There is some standard advert text for some commonly recruited to jobs. Changes should not normally be required. However, if you feel changes are needed, please agree this with Recruitment Lead in the Recruitment Team.

If you have placed an advert previously in Recruit you should be able to find the text previously used. If there is no standard advert for your job, you will need to liaise with the Recruitment Team to create a new one.

The following points should be considered when preparing new advert text:

The job advert should normally contain 120 to 150 words maximum. Additional background information about the job can be included in attachments.

Do:

  • consider the advert from the perspective of the potential applicant especially someone who doesn’t already work for the council.
  • check spelling, style and punctuation.
  • use simple and concise language - write in plain English.
  • use capital letters in their proper place.
  • include a brief purpose of the role.
  • include any essential qualifications, key skills, knowledge and experience.
  • include the interview/test/assessment date.
  • if you include a contact name for more information, give an email address as well as a phone number so that deaf people can make contact.
  • proofread your advert prior to submitting.

Don’t:

  • nclude unnecessary detail or jargon.
  • repeat text already detailed in the core information held on the website.
  • use bold text or words all in capital letters.
  • give an advantage to internal candidates.
  • use any wording that could be construed as discriminatory including references to number of years’ experience required.

The text that will be used for any press or other adverts should be the same as that placed on the website, unless alternative wording has been agreed. This is to ensure consistency for all applicants.
