Social work apprenticeships

We are constantly planning to ensure that we have enough social workers to meet our future needs. We recognise the benefits of building upon our existing talent to provide the exciting opportunity for colleagues to regularly apply for a limited number of level 6 social work degree apprenticeship opportunities, delivered in partnership with Nottingham Trent University.

Since January 2020, we have supported 3 cohorts in partnership with adult social care and children's services. Through this initiative, we have assisted 18 colleagues from adult social care and 27 colleagues from children's services.

To date, 3 individuals from adult social care and 12 from children's services have successfully qualified as social workers, while 27 others are still in progress across both services.

The current provider is Nottingham Trent University.

Course overview

The Social Work (Integrated Degree) Apprenticeship, level 6, is a work-based learning route which takes approximately 3 years to complete.

Teaching takes place on campus one day per week (2 to 3 days during induction at the start of the course) and includes on campus teaching, as well as blended learning, online teaching and pre-recorded teaching. A number of modules will be worked through during the 3 years.

Off-the-job hours are given to each apprentice to support their learning whilst working (a minimum of 6 hours per week throughout the apprenticeship).

The apprentice is aligned to the Social Work Apprenticeship Standards, with each apprentice needing to build a portfolio of evidence against the knowledge, skills and behaviours for each framework throughout their time on the course.

Each apprentice has to complete 2 placements, where they have to evidence competence across the 9 domains specified for those placements in the social work Professional Capabilities Framework.

During the third year, each social work apprentice has to undergo the Gateway and End Point Assessment (EPA) for the course – during which each apprentice will be assessed through several methods including essays, reports, case study analysis, reflective analysis and logs, self-assessment, presentation (individual and groups), examinations and academic posters, all leading to the final EPA.

The application process

These social work apprenticeships are being offered through Recruit, to existing employees in adult social care or children's services. To be eligible to apply applicants need to:

  • have worked for the authority for a minimum of one year (at the point the application period ends) and have experience in working directly with adults (if applying for a position with adult social care) or children and or families (if applying for a position with children's services)
  • have, and be able to show evidence of, GCSE maths and English language grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications, certificates need to be uploaded with your application)
  • be able to demonstrate to the department that you have the potential to complete the apprenticeship programme
  • be willing to apply for a social worker post with our adult social care or children’s services departments on completion of the programme

This may be subject to change for future cohorts.

All applications will go through an initial assessment and screening process, with shortlisted applicants then being invited to a joint assessment together with Nottingham Trent University.

Applications for the 2025 cohort have now closed.
