In Derbyshire, we have been advised that the government’s decision to create two new unitary councils is to be paused to allow for a review. This is not an isolated position for Derbyshire, it is part of a national review of LGR generally.
We know that this will raise many questions but at this stage we are awaiting further details from government on what this means for future timescales and next steps.
Over recent months, the 10 councils across Derbyshire have been working closely together to prepare for LGR. Through this collaborative work, we have built strong relationships, developed a shared understanding of opportunities and challenges, and established solid foundations for the future.
As a result, we are in a strong position to respond constructively to any revised timetable or guidance. The work completed to date remains valuable and has strengthened partnership working across Derbyshire.
For now, there is no impact on day-to-day services, and our focus remains on delivering high-quality services for residents, communities and businesses. We will continue to work closely with our local authority partners while awaiting further information.
