Another successful prosecution for our trading standards and legal services colleagues

29 June 2023

Officers from our trading standards and legal teams have added another successful prosecution to their list in the war against traders selling illegal cigarettes and rolling tobacco.

A case heard this week by Southern Derbyshire Magistrates saw a shop worker at an Ilkeston store being sentenced to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to possessing and selling illegal tobacco.

Trading standards had been monitoring the shop and had given 2 warnings before carrying out a raid which led to the prosecution under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

As well as the sentence of a 12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work, the defendant was ordered to pay £3,475 prosecution costs along with a £90 victim surcharge.
