Anti Slavery Day – find out more and help combat modern slavery

16 October 2024

Anti-Slavery Day is 18 October and it provides an opportunity to raise awareness of modern slavery in the UK and across Europe.

When people hear the term ‘slavery’ they may think of historic events, but slavery is still happening today.

It is estimated that more than 130,000 people are living under slavery in the UK, being exploited sexually, criminally or for their labour.

Victims

In 2023, 17,004 potential victims of modern slavery were referred to the Home Office, with a further 4,929 who wished to remain anonymous. This affects adults, children, British citizens and those trafficked from overseas.

In Derbyshire there were a total of 172 referrals in 2023.

We publish a Modern Slavery Statement each year to show the steps we're taking to combat modern slavery. You can also find out more about how you can help prevent it, with information, guidance and a webinar on the Safer Derbyshire website.
