Black History Month - learn about black cultures and histories

22 September 2022

October’s Black History Month is an annual celebration of the contribution that Black African and Caribbean communities have made both locally and across the country.  It is an opportunity to learn, understand and celebrate Black cultures and histories and we are proud to be a part of this celebration.

Join us on Tuesday, 18 October from 10am to 1pm in the Member’s Room at County Hall to mark this year’s Black History Month, network and hear from some engaging guest speakers. Included in the programme are:

Deniz Önaç

Hear from a local author who will talk about his personal story of living in Jamaica for over 20 years, what inspires him and about his latest book ‘The Colour of My Heart: A True Story of Hope, Perseverance and Love’.

‘Chesterfield Black Stories’

Learn from members of the Chesterfield African Caribbean Community Association about their untold stories through a photo exhibition.

Samantha Samuels

Group Commander at West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service will share her journey as a Black female firefighter, and reflect on challenges, her leadership role and what organisations should do to promote inclusion.
