Black History Month

6 October 2023

October is Black History Month (BHM) – an annual celebration of the contribution that Black African and Caribbean communities have made both locally and across the country.

Although we recognise and celebrate our culture throughout the year, October is a special month of national recognition and celebration, as well as a time of reflection. It's an opportunity to learn, understand and celebrate Black cultures and histories and we're proud to be a part of this celebration.

As well as the Saluting our Sisters in-person event at County Hall on 19 October, there will be an exhibition in the reception area at County Hall between 17 and 25 October with more than 30 images, mostly women and girls, paying homage to their often-overlooked role of persistent defiance, strength and hope.

This year, together with other local partner organisations, we have created a shared page to host information, resources and signpost colleagues to various initiatives across Derby and Derbyshire.
