Building our new portfolio management and transformation function

18 May 2023

Last month, Joe O’Sullivan shared the launch of the new Transformation and Strategy Division and welcomed Phil Dunn, our new interim Director of Transformation and Strategy.

As part of setting up this new division, we officially launched the portfolio management and transformation function back on 3 April 2023.

Our Assistant Director for portfolio management and transformation, Gemma Bains, shares some of the recent developments that have taken place since we launched.

"As a new function there is lots to do and over the past 6 weeks we have been focusing on some key areas, working in close collaboration with colleagues across the council.

"We are continuing to build our team and are excited to welcome our new head of portfolio management office (PMO), Louise Bennett, who will be joining us at the end of May. The PMO will help senior leaders to ensure that we are investing in the right projects and programmes to achieve its strategic objectives, and provide assurance that we are managing our projects and programmes in the right way.

"We have been meeting with our colleagues in departments who are running our programmes and projects to support them with moving over to our new templates and processes, starting with our new highlight report. By having consistent templates and processes we can ensure standardised management information, creating visibility, enabling clear benefits against cost and risk, helping to ensure they deliver maximum impact and value for money.

"We are adding new templates and guidance to our SharePoint site all the time, this is intended to be a toolkit for programme and project managers, helping to ensure that we, as a council, are managing change effectively.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank our colleagues across the council for their invaluable support and contribution to the work we have been doing to establish our portfolio management and transformation function. We will be continuing to work hard to build on our work so far, and I look forward to sharing our progress with you as our new function becomes more established.”
