Celebrating Derbyshire carers this Foster Care Fortnight

14 May 2026

We're celebrating the vital role our carers play in transforming young lives as part of this month's Foster Care Fortnight.

The event, which launched on Monday and runs until Sunday 24 May 2026, this year has the theme 'This Is Fostering' aiming to highlight the realities of fostering and the difference carers make every day.

Were part of Foster for East Midlands Councils - a regional fostering hub, bringing together Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire councils. Collectively we aim to increase the number of foster carers across the region while ensuring they receive the support and guidance needed to succeed.

Call for more carers

We need more carers so Derbyshire children can remain close to their schools, friends and communities, maintaining important connections and stability.

During Foster Care Fortnight 2026, Derbyshire carers have shared their stories to raise awareness of fostering and encourage more people to consider making a difference. You can listen to Saira, Hayley and Lee on the Foster for East Midlands YouTube channel.

Employees who foster

If you've ever thought about fostering, it's worth knowing that as part of our Foster Friendly status, employees who foster (or who are approved kinship carers) are entitled to dedicated leave to help them manage the responsibilities of being a carer. This includes:

  • up to 5 days paid leave and 5 days unpaid leave in any rolling 12‑month period for training, introductory meetings, support groups, annual reviews, and key events related to the child or young person in your care
  • an additional one‑off entitlement of up to 4 days paid leave during the assessment and approval process, including:
    • up to 3 days for assessment and initial training
    • one day for attending the approval panel
This allocation applies per fostering household, not per child

Anyone who would like to find out more about fostering can visit Foster for East Midlands Councils or telephone: 03033 132 950.
