Celebrating our care experienced young people

6 November 2025

During November, we’ll be celebrating the achievements of our care experienced young people.

The national event is themed Rising as Me: Overcoming challenges, transforming, and finding your identity and is a great time for all colleagues to come together and honour the strength, achievements and voices of the young people who have experienced care.

We are being encouraged to care by:

  • celebrating care leavers / care experienced individuals
  • amplifying their voices
  • raising awareness of challenges
  • encouraging change in policy and practice

We recently hosted a visit from Mark Riddell, the DFE National Implementation Adviser for care leavers who left our senior leaders, lead members and our partners feeling inspired about how we can be the very best corporate parents.

Events are also being held this month:

  • Derbyshire believes in me awards night:  A special event to celebrate and recognise the achievements of our children in care
  • care leaver awards night: Our annual awards evening is back! We’ll be shining a spotlight on the successes of our care experienced young people
  • staff vs children football match at Chesterfield Football Club: A friendly competition as staff and young people take to the pitch together
  • appreciative enquiry (Teams event): 20 November at 11:30am: This session will include a discussion with a care experienced young person and their leaving care personal advisor. Register for a place.

We encourage all colleagues, not just those working in leaving care services, to have the same aspirations and care for our care experienced young people as we do for our own children.
