Digital approach to support moving and handling

24 October 2025

Every day, thousands of frontline colleagues across Adult Care and Children’s Services support people with complex needs, disabilities, and mobility challenges.

These colleagues play a vital role in ensuring the safety, dignity, and independence of the individuals they care for. Moving and handling is a core part of this work, directly affecting not only colleagues’ confidence and safety, but also the wellbeing of the people they support.

As part of our ongoing review of our moving and handling training, we’ve introduced a fresh digital approach to help colleagues feel more confident and informed when using equipment. Previously, the training lacked engaging and easily accessible resources to support learning beyond the practical training days. To address this, we’ve developed a new video-based training library on Derbyshire Learning Online (DLO).

We’re creating short, visual video guides that are typically 2 to 4 minutes long for over 20 pieces of equipment and key processes, such as mini-lifts and safe movement principles. These videos focus on safe usage and essential information, making them quick and practical for colleagues to use. We’ve prioritised equipment that isn’t covered during the practical training day, as well as items flagged as being high risk. To extend the reach of these resources, we’re working with MEDEQUIP to feature the videos on the TCES Community Services website, so colleagues can access these when ordering equipment.

To keep the resource visible and useful over time, we’ve also adapted DLO to send strategic reminders to learners. These reminders include direct links to the video guides, helping colleagues revisit the content when it’s most relevant to their work. This approach is especially important when we consider that people forget up to 70% of new information within 24 hours unless it’s reviewed. By offering on-demand access to these videos, we’re helping colleagues refresh their knowledge when they need it most, improving retention and confidence.

The videos have been incredibly well-received so far, being easier to understand than written guides, which can be hard to visualise, especially for busy colleagues who need quick, practical information. Having all the resources in one central, easy-to-find location also saves time and supports safer, more effective care.
