Don't be tempted by open water
14 July 2022
No matter how hot it gets, don't be tempted to cool down in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and quarries. You really don't know what is lurking beneath the surface and hidden debris can trap you.
Cold water shock will cause your heart rate to rise, causing panic and difficulty breathing.
Your muscles can cramp and this will mean you can't swim, even if your think you’re a strong swimmer.
Please be aware of the dangers, but most importantly if you find yourself in difficulty in water:
- lay on your back
- arms and legs out like a star
- float, calm your breathing and shout for help!
