Healthy Workplaces Derbyshire helps police win award

22 July 2020

Our Healthy Workplaces Derbyshire, Live Life Better and mental health teams have been working with Derbyshire Constabulary to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of the staff in the control room at force headquarters in Ripley. They had so much success that the Constabulary recently won the National Police Wellbeing Service’s Oscar Kilo absence management award in recognition of the innovative wellbeing project.

There was a concern about the mental health of the staff in the control room so the constabulary HR team and our Healthy Workplaces team devised a survey which identified areas that needed addressing – physical activity, general health promotion, weight loss, mental health, and healthy eating.

From these survey results, a bespoke 12-month plan was developed which included the following:

  • arranging for a specialist training on mental health to deliver resilience training to staff and team leaders
  • training volunteers to undertake the Workplace Health Champion role
  • health checks and body MOTs in the workplace
  • on site weight management group
  • healthy eating support

The project has proved to be a great success, with many control room staff taking advantage of the support and advice on offer to them.

Derbyshire Constabulary found a decrease in lost working days which equated to a £139,000 annual saving and that staff are coming back to work from sickness sooner.

Well done to all our staff for their contribution to the success of the project.
