Holocaust Memorial Day - Thursday 27 January 2022

26 January 2022

It’s Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) this Thursday 27 January 2022 - marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi death camps. A day to remember and reflect upon the impact of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

On Thursday 27 January at 8pm we’re encouraged by the HMD Trust to light a candle and put it safely in our windows in remembrance and solidarity against prejudice and hatred today.

The UK ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 will be streamed online on Thursday at 7pm. You can register to watch the national ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day.

Our libraries at Alfreton, Ashbourne, Ripley, New Mills, Dronfield, Newbold, Swadlincote and Buxton are staging displays to mark the day and Ashbourne library is hosting a book discussion event.

In Derbyshire we have supported communities fleeing from atrocities. We have provided safety to post-war refugees after the Second World War, refugees from Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, and Kosovo in the 90s through to more recent refugees from countries such as Eritrea, Sudan, Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria.
