International Youth Day 2024 – celebrating the achievements of our children in care

16 August 2024

International Youth Day is a global celebration of the contributions, aspirations and potential of young people around the world.

Linking closely to these aims, earlier in the year our participation team within Children’s Services supported a series of events and activities for the Children’s Commissioners: The Big Ambition campaign.

The team worked with our young people in care aged between 10 and 16 years old to explore their own ‘Big Ambitions, My Dreams, My Future’ delivered through a series of activities focusing on giving young people information about careers and aspirations. Employers from the NHS attended, and the event included a tour of a fire station and the chance to take part in a bike repair workshop.

Following on from this, we asked our young people to share with us anything amazing they had taken part in or achieved which has supported their ambition. These stories are available to read on the Children’s Services Info Hub.

James Gracey – Director, Strategic Commissioning, Quality and Performance in Children’s Services said:

“Part of our vision for Children’s Services here in Derbyshire is to inspire and empower children and young people to be the best they can be. Celebrating International Youth Day today is a great opportunity to recognise the achievements of our young people and the potential they have to make a difference.

“I’d like to say well done to those young people who shared their incredible stories, I hope you enjoy reading them.”

International Youth Day is one of the events that we recognise through our annual diversity and inclusion calendar.
