It's week two of Mode Shift Month

15 September 2025

How was your first week of Mode Shift Month? For those who jumped in the saddle for Love to Ride Cycle September, keep on pedalling.

During this week we turn our attention to walking and wheeling.

For those unfamiliar with the term, wheeling is the alternative to walking and includes manual, self or assistant-propelled wheelchairs.

How to take part

For those with childcare responsibilities, the walk to school is a great opportunity to help reduce school run congestion and even if you have to drive you can ‘Park and Stride’ by leaving the car away from school and walking the last distance.

Walking to work, of course, may not be practical – but a lunchtime walk to the park or shops could be an option.

Walking is also a great opportunity to connect with other people, nature and the world around us. Our colleagues in the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Team have produced this great map to show places you can get active across Derbyshire, including the location of the “Let’s Chat benches”.

There are also details of how to access the Peak District National Park 'Miles without Stiles' for those with limited mobility, including wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, and the visually impaired.

Join us next week as we jump on the bus, and take a rail ride.
