This week we’re looking at what how we create the 2 new councils, our vision for these authorities and the opportunities we have to make them as stronger and more efficient....
LGR is not simply about moving existing arrangements into a new structure. Over the next 2 years, there will be opportunities to make changes that help services, systems and ways of working operate more effectively ahead of vesting day.
There are a number of programmes focused on change for the organisation, including LGR, making sure we are as efficient as possible, and responding to wider public sector reform. Collectively, this work will be known as Derbyshire 2028, or D2028 for short.
In week 2, we used the analogy of packing up and moving to a new house. As we get ready for that move, we also need to make sure that anything we pack is in the best condition it can be. For LGR, that means looking at the services, systems, processes and ways of working we may take forward, and doing what we can now to make them clearer, stronger and more effective before vesting day.
Through Derbyshire 2028, this work is being brought together so we can focus on the changes that will help prepare us for vesting day and the creation of the 2 new councils. Some of this work will support our current organisation, while other areas will help create stronger foundations for what follows.
That means being clear about where things could be simpler, more consistent or in better shape before we get there. This could include processes, systems, customer journeys, policies, data, ways of working, or how people access information and support.
This does not mean trying to fix everything at once. Some things will need to continue as they are to maintain safe and effective services. Others may need practical changes before vesting day so the new councils can operate effectively from day one.
The aim is to use the time available wisely: improving what we can now, preparing for the decisions that will need to come later and making sure vesting day is not the start of change, but the next step in a journey that is already underway.
