Looking ahead - our plan and key priorities for 2026 to 2029

26 January 2026

Cabinet members will be asked to approve our revised Council Plan at a meeting on 29 January 2026.

The Council Plan sets the direction of the council over the next 3 years and outlines our vision and the outcomes we are seeking to achieve. Every colleague’s contribution plays a vital role in achieving these. The vision and outcomes set out in the draft plan are:

Vision

Working together to improve lives across Derbyshire, through strong local leadership, efficient services and local control.

Outcomes

We want Derbyshire to have:

  • communities where people live safe, healthy, independent lives
  • great places to live and work
  • local, high-quality council services.

The Council Plan also sets out the key areas we need to focus on to achieve our ambitions, including:

  • faster, more efficient road repairs and fewer potholes
  • managing our finances well to achieve budget savings
  • transforming the council into a more streamlined, efficient organisation
  • boosting the economy, working with the East Midlands Combined County Authority
  • prioritising SEND services, improving timeliness, capacity, and outcomes
  • giving children the best start in life and helping families early so they can thrive
  • working with partners to improve care services while helping residents who receive support to improve their independence
  • helping people to tackle the biggest health risks – smoking, drinking, poor diet, and lack of exercise
  • improving Derbyshire’s natural environment and heritage
