Multi-factor authentication update

21 July 2026

A huge thank you to everyone across Coporate Services and Transformation for your support, patience and teamwork in helping us successfully roll out Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

This has been a significant piece of work and your willingness to embrace the change, support colleagues, and help resolve issues along the way has been fantastic.

Thanks to your efforts we've added an important extra layer of security that helps protect staff, data and services, making the Council more resilient against cyber threats.

As a reminder, Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is being rolled out as a mandatory verification step to help keep our accounts and data secure. #

It adds a simple extra check when you sign in, to check it’s really you logging on, and is widely used by organisations to prevent unauthorised access.

It requires you to verify your sign-in using something you know (your password) and something you have, such as:

  • a notification or code from the Microsoft Authenticator app
  • a code sent to your personal email address
  • a text message or phone call to your mobile

If you don’t have a suitable device to set MFA up with, please speak to your manager.

MFA is being rolled out in phases:

  • Place: 3rd August
  • Adult Social Care and Health: 7th September
  • Children’s Services: 5th October

If you don’t set up MFA by your department's deadline, you will lose access to Microsoft applications.

Please add at least 2 sign-in methods and keep these up to date.

From Wednesday 23 July, a pop-up message will appear on your screen when you login, to spread the message and as a reminder to set up MFA.

Guidance on how to register for MFA

Check whether you're already set up or to review your MFA methods

If you're a manager, please check with your team to ensure they've read this message, registered for MFA, and are ready before your department is switched on.

If you have any issues registering, contact the IT Service Desk.
