Flu is often mistaken for a common cold, but it can be a much more serious illness. Caused by influenza viruses, flu cases typically increase during the winter months and can spread quickly in workplaces, homes and communities.
Common symptoms of flu include:
- a high temperature (fever)
- chills and sweating
- headache
- muscle and body aches
- extreme tiredness
- a dry chesty cough
- sore throat
- loss of appetite.
While most healthy people recover within a week or two, flu can cause serious complications for vulnerable people, including older adults, pregnant women and people with long-term health conditions. In some cases, it can lead to hospital admission or even death.
The best protection against flu is vaccination. By having your flu jab, you not only help protect yourself from becoming seriously unwell but also help reduce the risk of passing flu on to colleagues, family members and those who may be more vulnerable.
If you are eligible, we strongly encourage you to take up the offer of a free NHS flu vaccination. If you are not eligible, flu vaccinations are still available through Derbyshire's community pharmacies and other providers, typically costing around £20.
