Who are care leavers?
Care leavers are young people aged 16 to 25 who have been in the care of a local authority, such as foster or residential care. They may also be referred to as 'care experienced'.
Why is this important?
As employees we all share a responsibility as corporate parents. This means we should treat care experienced young people with the same care, respect, and ambition as we would for the children in our own lives. Our role is to ensure they feel supported, valued, and given every opportunity to thrive.
How can you help?
- be aware of the challenges care leavers may face, such as housing, employment, and emotional wellbeing
- offer understanding and flexibility when interacting with care experienced young people
- promote opportunities within the council for apprenticeships, training, and employment
- champion inclusivity and challenge stigma wherever you see it
Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of care leavers by creating a supportive environment that helps them achieve their goals.
Our corporate parenting board has produced a video which captures what corporate parenting truly means for us as an organisation.
