We want to secure the building’s long-term future and create a mixed-use development that supports jobs, homes, businesses and the wider community in Derbyshire.
Large complex schemes like this take time to work through the planning process and the application is due to be considered by Derbyshire Dales District Council in the coming months.
A great deal of work has been going on in the meantime and the project has taken an exciting step forward as we’ve now launched a competitive procurement process to find a development partner to deliver the regeneration of the site. This is a detailed and lengthy process and will take several months to complete.
Our regeneration proposals include restoring and reusing the historic South Block and Winter Gardens as a hotel and events venue. There are also plans to create new homes at the site as well as flexible workspace for local businesses.
For us it would mean moving away from outdated accommodation to a new civic office, providing us with modern offices with better technology and lower running costs.
We have been working with partners to make sure that the proposals will support local government reorganisation and still deliver all of the benefits.
As a council we will retain ownership of the site and oversight of the scheme through a long-term development agreement.
Subject to getting the necessary planning approval we expect works to begin from 2027.
We will keep you updated as the project progresses.
