Walking Together - mining memorial event

3 August 2023

Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the 1973 Mining Disaster at Markham Colliery.

Colleagues Peter Storey and Trudi Saxton played key roles in co-ordinating a recent, poignant event at our Markham Vale Environment Centre (MVEC) A 50th anniversary service was held to remember the 18 men killed in the Markham Colliery Mining Disaster of 1973.

Peter and Trudi gathered together relatives and dignitaries for the service which included speeches, wreath laying, prayers and time for quiet reflection at the site of the Walking Together mining memorial. The memorial honours the 18 killed in 1973 along with the other 88 men who had perished in previous disasters.

Two benches have been donated by the Association of British Mining Equipment Companies and the Health and Safety Executive to mark the 50th anniversary and provide a peaceful place to sit and remember.

Trudi is manager of the MVEC and Peter is Head of the Markham Employment Growth Zone
