What are values?

4 July 2025

At their core, values are our guiding principles that shape how we make decisions and interact with each other.

They describe who we are and what we stand for as a council – they help shape our culture and encourage consistent behaviours.

What are our values at Derbyshire County Council?

Our values were co-developed with colleagues across the council to support the delivery of our Council Plan and they play an important role in our success as a council. We’ve produced a short video explaining what our values are and how they were developed.

Why are values important?

Values are a reflection of what we aspire to be, both as individuals and as an organisation.

Our values act as a compass and help guide our behaviours and decisions.

How do we live our values?

Living our values starts with each of us, every single day.

Everyone plays a part in bringing our values to life and embedding them into all that we do!

We’ll keep recognising and sharing the ways we see them in action.

Our values – deep dive

We will soon be launching monthly deep dives on each of our values, to help everyone understand what they are and how they influence the way we work.
