Abi Metcalfe
Nominated by: Emma Johnston
Department: Corporate Services and Transformation
Reason for nomination:
Abi has been the driving force behind the delivery of the property and facilities related elements of the Modern Ways of Working programme. Together with her team, she has successfully managed the reorganisation of space at County Hall and a number of other sites under difficult and ever-changing circumstances. Abi has been excellent at providing colleagues with clear, concise information throughout the project as feedback from the Modern Ways of Working online briefings proves.
Beyond delivering the essential requirements for the role, Abi has always focused on the people being affected by any changes and worked hard to keep them involved in the process. She has set up and co-ordinated liaison groups across all departments to explain approaches and seek feedback. When problems have occurred, Abi has been very quick to help resolve them and taken a lot of care even with relatively small issues.
Abi and her team work meticulously to ensure that waste is minimised and that we make the best use of unwanted equipment removed from offices. Rather than taking the easy option, they have ensured that items that can’t be reused are given to local community groups, charity shops or appropriately recycled. Barbara Burbage
Nominated by: Lois Race
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
I am nominating Barbara for Employee of the Year. Barbara works as a Team Leader in the Derbyshire Discretionary Fund (DDF). She embodies and models the values of supporting local people facing difficult times without judgement, and with dignity. Barbara has gone above and beyond to support the staff team in an extremely busy and emotionally demanding climate. Service demand in the context of cost of living pressures can make the DDF role feel relentless at times, and Barbara is pro-actively attentive to staff wellbeing; is a valued source of support to her colleagues; and actively works to improve systems and processes.
She has trained a whole series of new starters including agency staff with care and embedded the DDF and our values in both the way she welcomes the staff, and the way she trains staff to interact with residents.
Barbara recognises the ability of DDF to help achieve improved outcomes for residents in partnership with others and is keen to continue to improve the service offer. For example, during the pandemic and beyond, Barbara has developed and nurtured partnership working with providers supporting residents facing homelessness or being re-settled. This has enabled the DDF team to be rapidly responsive to individual needs, supported by the referring homelessness support worker, and reach a much swifter outcome for the client which is also more efficient for us to deliver.
Barbara tells us that she loves her job and this shines through. But we also know that she is considering retirement at some point in the next year or two. Being recognised through the ‘Our Derbyshire Awards’ would be a fitting recognition for her commitment and care towards both the DDF staff team, who highly value her, and the residents the team supports.

Bridget Harmsworth
Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
Bridget is an inspiration to us all, she knows the Mosaic software inside out and always goes above and beyond her role to help others and resolve Mosaic issues. I know how hard she worked on the group working update and was the person who figured out the reason behind the issues and put in a huge number of hours into resolving the issues so that the update could go live as soon as possible. She is always considering others and even outside of work thinks about ongoing work, how this can be achieved or how problems can be resolved. She will log on outside of her working hours to support others when needed (for example logging on Christmas eve when someone in IT needed her expertise) and she always strives to ensure all Mosaic users get the best service possible. She tries to make sure everything shared is inclusive, such as ensuring we know that the font Ariel is the best font for people with additional needs to read. She always sets an excellent example to everyone in the team, yet is supportive and always at the end of the phone when needed. She is an asset to the organisation, I feel she is deserving of the employee of the year award and I know how unexpected and gratefully received this award would be to her.

Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Corporate Services and Transformation
Reason for nomination:
I am nominating Cheryll Hodgson for Employee of the Year because she always works hard to deliver excellent service to our customers, she has worked for us for many years and is experienced and knowledgeable. She is empathetic with customers or representatives and does her best for them. The decisions she makes are mindful of budgets, well thought out, clear and considerate and she will take time to explain the reasons to the customer if required.
She has a positive attitude to change, influencing her team to work together to react constructively to challenges and listening to their points of view. She is also a supportive leader; she takes on additional work if there are team members off so that others do not have to. Also, she will make time to listen to any problems, professional or personal, that you might have and does her best to help you to work through them in a positive way. She is also ready to encourage colleagues to learn new skills and apply for other posts for their own personal development. She really helped me when I was struggling with my mental health during the Covid pandemic. I was feeling disconnected and she came to visit me at home in her own time to check that I was OK which I really appreciated and felt was above and beyond her role. She also visited other colleagues during the pandemic and helped transport equipment to them at home when they couldn’t attend work to enable them to work from home and continue to do their job uninterrupted.
Chloe Clarke (nee Hunter)
Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
Chloe Clarke (nee Hunter) is in my (and many other's opinions) the backbone of children's services from a team coordinator perspective. She knows who is who - how to contact them where they are based, what new incentives have come into place and when and what she doesn't know about policy and procedures and mosaic is probably not worth knowing. She is so on the ball! Chloe has had a very tough couple of years personally but has never failed to give 100% when she is working. She is fabulous at trouble shooting, offers so much support to the team - from CCW's to the team leader and always willing to tackle something new and or improve systems. Her commitment and knowledge mean that the Bolsover and Shirebrook Team have consistently good performance despite the current climate and increasing number of referrals and the team rely on her to help them all achieve it. She is a huge shining star in our eyes!
Chris Rogers

Chris managed this project excellently ensure that all parties (contractors, local residents, local farmers and owners, parish, district, county and local MP) were involved and informed throughout the process which was a few years in the planning before the delivery phase. He went above and beyond the scope of the project delivering more that the objectives were set out to do. All parties at the end of the project have been very pleased with the outcome and it looks highly likely that this project will have significantly reduce flood risk from now on. This project started in its planning phase in 2018 maybe earlier and completed in 2022.

Claire works in the Education Data Hub team which provides Data Protection Officer Services to schools, academies and Trusts in Derbyshire and across the whole of England. She has been instrumental is setting the team up as Enterprising, attracting new business from across England as well as just in Derbyshire. This work means that Derbyshire is now recognised, in the sector, a being at the forefront of expertise and support of school in Data Protection matters. As a consequence of Claire’s work, the team are regularly consulted by other professional bodies, including the IRMS, the DfE and other local councils who are interested in learning from our model and expertise – including WestOne (Bath and Somerset) and Gloucestershire. Closer to home, Claire is regarded by our local schools as a massive support to them, particularly in very difficult times, She is a defender of data subjects rights and has no hesitation in taking schools and their processes to task if needed. But much more importantly, in true David and Goliath fashion, Claire will challenge the big Edtech providers (including Google!) to ensure they are compliant with the law in their processing of children’s data as well as defend the schools, their staff and governors against vexatious and unfounded requests. The quality of her investigations and reports into serious data breaches have so satisfied the ICO on multiple occasions that they have not felt the need to pursue any further action against schools, when in normal cases, we would expect this to be so. Claire is also the IRMS 2022 New Professional of the Year. Finally, she is a trusted colleague, an immensely important cog in our team, an empathetic and supportive manager – I couldn’t do without her.

The feedback we receive from the attendee's about the success of the programme and the difference that it is making to women and children's lives is phenomenal. Encouraging women to move away from an abusive relationship or recognise the signs is no easy task but Claire manages to engage the women in the programme. We are very proud of Claire's achievement in this area of her work and her work is ongoing, Claire is now moving her skills forwards and is supporting in the writing of a programme around healthy relationships for young people.

Dan always goes above and beyond to help residents and colleagues, even with the hard year he has had with losing 3 of his very close family members, as well as two of our team to covid; he always comes into work with a smile and a willingness to help everybody anyway he can, this includes only being a phone call away when he isn’t on shift to offer advice and guidance. Residents and staff always look forward to being on shift with Dan for his fun, silly football loving ways and down to earth nature; he appreciates every employee and their role and how this creates a diverse team. He always works in a person-centred way with residents, making sure their thoughts, feeling, safety and wellbeing are always in the forefront of his mind in every decision that he makes, this includes ensuring all paperwork is up to date, putting their thoughts and feelings across in meetings and coming up with ideas for residents to do such as creating a games room during covid to help them. Emily Wilding
Nominated by: Christina Tudor
Department: Corporate Services and Transformation
Reason for nomination:
I am nominating Emily Wilding for Employee of the Year. In the past year she has worked incredibly hard to ensure that our customers - mostly senior managers - are fully supported in pretty challenging circumstances and on a new area of work - Transformation. The team initially was made up of a small number of short term agency staff (of varying skills and competence) and was operating in a fast moving and changing environment. Indeed she was often in a team of 1 and had little or no support! Even when new people joined the team she was often the only employee and as such we have needed her knowledge on a wide range of issues from the mundane to the strategic. So this has been a difficult and trying year, yet Emily has responded positively to every request - no matter how big or small, no matter from the MD or a junior colleague - and risen to every challenge with equanimity and enthusiasm. Nothing has been left out, she has worked tirelessly to support her colleagues. The successful implementation of the Strategic Transformation Programme is large part due to her unwavering tenacity, intelligence, engagement with colleagues and commitment to getting the best possible outcomes for her fellow Derbyshire residents.
Foong Chee
Nominated by: Robin Heath
Department: Childrens Services

I am nominating Foong for 'Employee of the Year Award'. Foong is part of our catering team at White Hall Centre. Foong joined our team just before lockdown in 2020. Foong has been an excellent, enthusiastic and hard working member of staff since day 1. Foong always comes to work with a positive attitude and always does her absolute best to cater for the needs of every child. This is reflected in the feedback received about Foong's food and the high levels of customer satisfaction with regards to the catering. We lost our catering supervisor around the time Foong started, and despite her being new to the centre, she stepped up to help fill the gap and her efforts were invaluable in continued good service until a new catering supervisor could be recruited. The feedback received from impact surveys completed by young people shows that they overwhelmingly try, and enjoy healthy food while at White Hall, thanks to the fantastic food provided by the catering team.

Reason for nomination:
Rising Star Jord commenced employment in September 2019 as an apprentice. I have had the pleasure of working with Jord since October 2020 when he gained a permanent role as a business services assistant (grade 4) supporting the Education Improvement Service.
Jord joined the team during the pandemic and just as the service was completely changing the delivery of training for teachers from in-person to virtual. The service had significant traded income targets and needed to adapt quickly. Jord supported the service with the setting up, promotion and communication of all events, leading to valuable revenue. Jord picked up everything at pace and built positive relationships all whilst working from home. This role had changed significantly from the previous postholder and Jord’s willingness to learn has enabled him to thrive and develop this role.
Jord is a very helpful and polite young man who continues to grow in confidence. He really cares about what he does and is so supportive to others. Jord has had no time off due to sickness and has commented that his mental health has never been so good. Jord is a care leaver and experienced the most difficult days of his life when he was aged 11 to 17. Jord lived in various children’s homes both in and out of Derbyshire, he missed 1.5 years of secondary school and went to 5 different education providers within 6 months of leaving school.
At 18, Jord independently moved into his own place. Jord’s determination led him to apply for the apprenticeship programme. Jord achieved his apprenticeship and has since been successful in gaining a promotion within the same team to a grade 6 role with supervisory responsibility. Jord is a rising star and can hopefully fulfil his aspiration of becoming a residential worker in a children’s home.

Kimberly Aucott
Nominated by: Tanya Brown
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
Kimberly is well known Social Worker/Practice Supervisor across Children’s Services working in Amber Valley since 2017. she receives regular feedback from professionals regarding the outstanding work she carries out with families; always going that extra mile to ensure children are supported, even if this comes at the detriment of her own work life balance.
Here are just 2 recent examples of how Kimberly has gone the extra mile: A young person (YP) was accommodated by the local authority when she was 16 following her relationship breaking down with her mother. For her 18th Birthday, Kimberly started a collection which the team contributed to and purchased 18 gifts for Child A, all meaningful with handwritten notes. Kimberly attended the YP birthday party (organised by her placement), going above and beyond to make her 18th birthday special which had a huge impact on the YP.
Kimberly had worked with a child for several months; developing a positive working relationship with them. Sadly, the girls parents died suddenly within 2 days of each other. As you can imagine, this was traumatising for a young girl, and had very little family, therefore, needed to be accommodated. Kimberly was very aware she was the only consistent person in this little girls life! Despite stepping up into a non-case holding role, Kimberly insisted on retaining responsibility for the child, being very aware she has been the only consistent in this young girls life. Kimberly’s journey with the girl has been very emotional, from supporting her to get her belongings, attending the funeral to just reminiscing whilst having cake! Kimberly has laughed and cried with the helping her to see these emotions as a normal part of the grieving process.
Kimberly is an inspiration, being a dedicated and child focussed practitioner and a credit to the profession and the council!

Lisa Anderton
Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
I am nominating Lisa for employee of the year award. Lisa leads the portage home visiting service which is a small but extremely valuable team within the Early Years SEN service, working with parents / carers to support very young children with complex special educational needs (SEN) in their own homes. Lisa ensures that these families receive an excellent quality of care, and supports her team with fortnightly supervisions and regular EWB sessions.
Lisa has been innovative in finding ways to meet the needs of this group of young children so that the capacity of the service is maximised. This work has included setting up a 'Portage Pals' group and joint partnership working with speech and language therapists and specialist teachers from the sensory and physical support service. These two initiatives required in depth engagement and involvement of colleagues, professional partners in Health and Social Care as well as talking to parents of the young children with SEN to ensure that their needs would be met. They also clearly demonstrate how Lisa ensures that she uses the resources her team have wisely to provide excellent value for money within the authority.
In addition, Lisa has been a member of the steering group for Sensory Processing Needs since its inception in 2019 and has been instrumental in driving improvement across the county in meeting the needs of children with sensory processing needs which are barriers to them accessing learning and social opportunities and can result in emotional dysregulation, anxiety and distress. This has been a multi-agency piece of work which Lisa has worked on tirelessly, co-authoring the Derbyshire Local Area Approach to Sensory Processing Needs toolkit and materials, running training, raising awareness, gaining feedback to evaluate the toolkit and then supporting revisions. This is a piece of work which has far reaching impact well beyond the Early Years age range with which Lisa works. Lisa's knowledge and understanding around sensory processing needs is phenomenal and her commitment to supporting children and young people with SPN and enabling other colleagues to also be able to support them is inspirational.
As if all this was not enough, Lisa also took on the responsibility and workload of leading the EYSEN service during the head of service's long term absence due to cancer treatment and surgery from end of June to the start of October 2022. Her resilience, patience, capacity, humour, care and professionalism are a model for all of us in the EYSEN service. Can I just add that Lisa will hate the fact that I have nominated her but I really believe that she deserves some recognition for her outstanding contribution to the work of the local authority with children and young people with complex SEND and their families.

Offering excellent customer service, Lisa has provided a confidential and non-judgemental service to clients, always encouraging them to take that first step and helping them address any barriers they may be facing in making a real change to their lifestyle. Despite challenging times, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lisa has always been enthusiastic, passionate and adaptable, even stepping up to support the Community Response Unit and vulnerable clients hit particularly hard by this.
Not only has Lisa had an impact on the lives of so many individuals, but her work has contributed significantly to tackling health inequalities across Derbyshire and she has made a true impact on the health of the Derbyshire population. Lisa continues to work incredibly hard and we hope she will stay as part of the Live Life Better Derbyshire Team for many years to come!

Maggie Beck
Nominated by: Saranjit Shetra
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
I am nominating Maggie Beck for the Employee of the Year Award. Maggie is the front line colleague in all communications that the Education Improvement Service (EIS) has with headteachers of Derbyshire Schools. She is very approachable and will complete requests from schools even if these don't automatically with the EIS. She is very knowledgeable and is great at signposting to our departments so that stakeholders feel supported in getting to the right person in the council.
She is highly adaptable and will support colleagues with any new systems and processes and she was pivotal to the service moving quickly to working on MS Teams at the start of the pandemic. As a result, communications with stakeholders remain very positive and our income generation has continued to grow. She has provided continuity of high quality business service support and is a very positive person to have as a team member. I can't thank her enough for her commitment to the EIS and she is a great ambassador for the council.
Maggie Goley
Nominated by: Sue Barford
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
The nomination is for Employee of the Year Award. Maggie works with children with a range of children with complex needs in maintained nursery and primary settings in collaboration with parent/carers and schools. Her expertise and experience (gained over the last 20 years) are respected amongst our team and the service. She had been involved in training as a moderator for the service and this had an impact in increasing the understanding and development of other teachers in the service to promote outstanding progress for our pupils. Maggie has been instrumental in designing guidance to bridge the P scale descriptors, for recording attainment for children with SEND, from P8, who were working towards the then ‘new’ 2014 national curriculum.
The impact this had on the service meant we could accurately record attainment for pupils. Maggie continually updates above and beyond what would be expected for a SSSEN teacher such as paying for her own training and doing it in her own time (without saying anything) for example in Neuro diversity looking at the way the brain works differently for example children with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia to find ways to teach children thereby improving the outcomes them.
The feedback shows the impact she is having as shown in the following statements:
Parent / Carers
"You are a god send. You are developing a good understanding of [child]."
"I feel a great understanding of my child as an individual has been achieved. This helps with individual progress and targets and has helped tremendously with my child’s progression."
"Maggie said about transitioning and tone of voice. We have used the strategies. They work. We thank you. You are doing an excellent job. All of you! He is making progress and reaping the rewards."
"[Child] highly values and thoroughly enjoys his sessions and we feel he has got a great deal out of it, making progress to his ability. I have been kept well informed and included throughout by his warm friendly yet professional SSSEN teacher."
School
"Thank you, you go above and beyond and we really appreciate all you do for school."
"SSSEN is the best Derbyshire LA service because it provides good on the ground advice and support on a weekly basis."
"Thank you to Maggie for the support and advice, and endless patience!"
Marcus Rowe

He puts everyone first, even though he doesn't have to do this, he ensures he takes leave around the service, hes extremely conscientious and has high customer service. He meets and greets visitors and goes above and beyond to make sure everyone in the building feels valued and welcomed. Marcus is a great example of excellent customer service and deserves to be nominated for the Employee of the Year award.
Matt Needham
Nominated by: Kay Bannister
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
I nominate Matt Needham as Social worker of the year. Matt works in ASC Chesterfield and Killamarsh MH P and P Team and is a wonderful colleague. If I ever needed a social worker I would definitely pick him as he goes over and above for everyone he works with and does such an excellent job! Matt has a sight impairment so has to use specialist equipment for his job as well as rely on public transport to do visits which can prove difficult at times, however he never complains and just gets on with it.
Throughout the pandemic Matt never had a day off and worked from home as we all did where his kitchen table was taken up by the enormity of equipment he needed to use, to do his job (quite difficult when you have a young family to entertain too during lockdown). Once he could return to work he did and comes in early each day and will not leave until way after 5pm, (which the team often nag him about).
All our team view Matt as a real inspiration as despite his disability he continues to support some very difficult service users and will always go the extra mile for others. Matt never complains and is an excellent colleague as he continues to share his valuable knowledge and experience to support the team and always makes time for others.
On a personal note (and I am sure I speak on behalf of the team) Matt keeps me grounded in my job and when I am having a tough day I look at him and think, well if Matt can keep going there is no reason why I can't. With regards to the above criteria, I feel Matt meets them all. He regularly supports colleagues and links in with various agencies where he has developed positive relationships and respect. He is always open, honest, fair, reliable and respectful when working with service users , colleagues and other agencies.
Matt has an extensive knowledge of local resources which he will tap into to help others and I know there have been many occasions where he has used his own money to make sure someone has food or gas and electricity credit. Matt was also born and bred in Chesterfield so has a passion to invest in the local community both personally and professionally. He is committed to seeing others thrive and do well and in view of this I believe he is a well deserving recipient of this award.
Matt Needham
Nominated by: Amanda Robinson
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
Nominating Matt Needham (Social Worker - Chesterfield PandP MH Team). Matt goes above and beyond every day for his team and clients. He is a highly valued and respected member of the team. Matt is conscientious and diligent in his work and provides a personalised, professional approach to his clients.
Matt is never off sick and is always willing to support the team (covering duty etc). Matt is thorough with his work and regularly works late to ensure his paperwork is completed promptly. Matt has developed an excellent working relationship with the professionals involved with the care of his clients and he promotes good inter agency working. To top it off Matt is a genuinely lovely man, who deserves this nomination for the high quality service he delivers for the council.
Nominated by: Rebecca Banner
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
Matt is my colleague and goes above and beyond to support the service users that he works with and colleagues within his team and outside agencies. He is extremely hard working, kind and considerate of all those that he comes into contact with. He is a asset to Derbyshire and if I or a family member needed a a social worker I would want it to be Matt.
Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
Matt is an outstanding social worker, hardworking, open, honest and extremely knowledgeable and helpful professional. He works empathetically with some of the most challenging clients in the MH team as well as professionals from different agencies. He has names of people including clients, agencies they work for, their numbers in his head and gladly shares this with others in the team making work easier and the environment a very positive place to be in.
Matt understands MH and adult social care processes and he prioritises clients in such a manner that he would never leave work until he has updated all records of service users. Matt is so relied upon by some of the clients that he still manages to find time to speak to several of them on daily or very regular basis. He is open and honest with them, offering advice and challenging some of their decisions in a very professional and respectable manner.
I have observed him supporting some of the clients in managing their finances and teaching them responsibility around their expenditures and consequences for this. He looks out for colleagues by checking they are well, gives lots of reassurance and praise to others who may doubt their abilities and he is such a credit to the team. Matt is always willing to support other team members both old and new. I joined the team in March 2021 from children's services and I have learnt so much in my current role from him, which has developed my confidence in my practice (something which to me is very rare) and he is doing the same with the newest members of the team. Matt’s attitude to work is such an inspiration and it's so uplifting to get up to go to work knowing he is there.
Nick Whitehead
Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Corporate Services and Transformation
Reason for nomination:
Nick is one of those people who just work hard all the time. Nick has years of technical expertise and employs his skills daily in seeking technical solutions to the ever-changing demands of council officers who need help. Nick is absolutely relentless in seeking solutions to whatever problem or challenge is thrown at him. He will often come back long after everyone has considered a problem insoluble with a question: 'What if we try this?' or 'I've been thinking - you could do it this way'.
Nick refuses to be beaten by a technical challenge and will work until he finds a solution. He is motivated by an unusual care and consideration for the officers and service users that his work affects. He will reflect on the outcome of work he is doing and is driven by a clear desire to get outcomes that work for real people in the real world. There are so many examples of Nick's commitment but the point with Nick is that he does this again and again and never seems to stop or tire of the effort to fix stuff for people to make their lives better. He's been like this year after year and deserves recognition for his enduring commitment.
Nova Fearon
Nominated by: Bernadette Birks
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
Nova is a very caring and committed individual who strives to go above and beyond in every aspect of her role. Nova was employed as a care worker and at the age of 62 years young was successful in obtaining a senior care role. She makes everyone feel valued. Younger member of the team say they feel safe when she is on duty. Family members have praised her for her love, care and support at end of life. One family recently emailed Matt Hanrahan to say how wonderful she was when his Mum was end of life. Nova hadn't any experience on a computer until her senior role and now is amazing with Mosaic and other tasks.
She is supportive to all her colleagues and is always eager to learn new things and share her knowledge. She will buy toiletries, sweets and clothes items for the residents without anyone's knowledge just to make their lives better (although we have spotted it) In her 18 years working at Briar Close she has never had a day of sick and we have to make her have annual leave as she just wouldn't use it.

Richard Handbury
Nominated by: councillor Julie Patten
Department: Place
Reason for nomination:
I would like to nominate Richard Handbury. Richard has the patience of a Saint! Part of his job is face to face with residents and parish councils, he is always kind and thoughtful, takes time to listen to their concerns and will always do his best to find a solution to their problem in a timely manner. He does not shy away from delivering news if he cannot meet their expectations. If you ask any parish council he interacts with you, you will find they hold him in high regard as a valued member of the council.
From my own perspective, Richard has a wealth of knowledge and a common sense approach to problems and issues which arise within highway safety and i have that confidence that if i have a problem, Richard will give the issue time and thought in how we might resolve it. He is dedicated and thorough, always with a smile and nothing is too much trouble. He is an amazing ambassador for Derbyshire and I really hope that he may get the recognition he truly deserves.
Robbie Sinclair
Nominated by: James Hodges
Department: Corporate Services and Transformation
Reason for nomination:
The econtent team in Customer and Communications has had a challenging time introducing the accessibility rules for content that is published on Our Derbyshire. Robbie has always been open to challenge, provides simple solutions and suggestions and is true to his word, delivering what he says he will. This has helped enable documents to be published on Our Derbyshire that are essential for our colleagues. He is supportive and sees the bigger picture about what we need to deliver as a council balanced with the needs and constraints and his team.
I've worked with Robbie on a number of activities over the last 3 years and he's always calm, knowledgeable and helpful and wants to enable something to happen rather than block it, despite the amount of work the team has to do already. He is realistic with timescales and what can be achieved so allows me to clearly plan what I need to do as part of any joint work.
Ruth Shaw
Nominated by: anonymous
Department: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
Ruth has been positive in every single conversation I have ever had with her about her work - which in itself I find amazing and worthy of nomination. Ruth is supportive, willing to take on any new projects and challenges thrown at her.
Ruth supports with public health service planning and has rooted at the heart of that work a deep commitment to the people of Derbyshire and securing outcomes for them. When Ruth is asked to gather information to support performance reporting she thinks about how it is best to do it from the perspective of a busy member of staff and through doing that secures excellent insight and intelligence which is used across the department and corporately.
Ruth has led the modern ways of working project for Public health and thought about the needs of all colleagues. Everything Ruth does is person centred and outcome focused and she is a really good role model for this authority.
Saranjit Shetra
Nominated by: Clive Worrall
Department: Childrens Services
Reason for nomination:
Saranjit Shetra leads the School Improvement Service. Her focus is always on ensuring that school leaders, and in particular headteachers, are supported and challenged to do the best they can. Saranjit will always respond promptly and directly to headteachers requests for help and is empathetic of their needs.
Saranjit is focused on her teams achieving their objectives. Currently there is substantial uncertainty regarding the placement of the services Saranjit oversees. Saranjit has led her teams to recognise the coming challenges but to focus on what they can have an impact on, including the communities we support. Schools have faced significant challenges during and following the pandemic. Saranjit has led her teams to make effective use of resources. Her teams adopted the use of MS Teams to increase their ability to communicate across council services and with schools.
Travel time, once a significant part of a working day, is significantly reduced for all these teams. Meetings are appropriate, focused, and timely. Saranjit has incorporated a focus on mental health and wellbeing in all team meetings. She introduced this shortly after the beginning of the pandemic. As a result, despite challenging times, teams have remained effective and engaged with schools. Relationships within and across these teams have remained strong.
Saranjit’s performance is exceptional on a day-to-day basis. It never drops. She is always incisive and encourages her teams to think clearly and focus on what is best for the children in Derbyshire. Saranjit has maintained focused and motivated teams. She has ensured that their relationships with schools have remained positive during difficult time and strengthened when possible. This particularly strong contribution to the council has been evident since the beginning of the pandemic to the current day.

Reason for nomination:
On behalf of the communications team we'd like to nominate Sue Pegg, head of development in children's services, for an employee of the year award for her outstanding work, attitude and consummate professionalism. By being the super helpful person she is, she has helped protect the council's reputation on numerous occasions by helping our team reply to some of the trickiest and most awkward questions from the media about many and varied, and often controversial, subjects. She recognises how important it is to deal with the media as a priority, and never complains that we're stopping her doing her other important work. She makes our job a lot easier and she is incredibly helpful. Her support has been invaluable over many years, not only for us, but for the council and its wider partners.
Suzanne Tunnicliffe
Nominated by: Helen Barrington
Department: Corporate Services and Transformation
Reason for nomination:
I wish to nominate Suzanne Tunnicliffe, Superintendent Registrar for Chesterfield, and Margaret Calladine, Registrar, for Employee of the Year. Suzanne and Margaret deliver excellent customer service focused on meeting the needs of the customer, but there is a specific event that demonstrates how they go the extra mile. The registrars are there for the residents of Derbyshire at the happiest of times – births, weddings and civil partnerships and the most difficult of times – ‘death bed’ ceremonies and registration of deaths and still births.
One such sad occasion that demonstrates Suzanne and Margaret’s compassion, understanding and willingness to go the extra mile occurred in October 2022. A couple wished to be married quickly as, sadly, one of them was extremely ill in hospital. The call was received after officers had finishing for the day on Friday; however in order to ensure that the ceremony could proceed as soon as possible and all the necessary paperwork was in order, Suzanne and Margaret returned to the office and then went to the hospital.
Due to the gravity of the situation, Suzanne offered to marry the couple there and then, but they wanted to delay until the following day so that family could attend. Suzanne and Margaret therefore left Friday evening with the intention to return on Saturday, but advised the hospital to contact them if the circumstances changed. Suzanne received a telephone call from the hospital at 2.30am and agreed to return immediately. She collected Margaret on her way to the hospital and they married the couple in the early hours of the morning, a short time before the individual passed away. It is an excellent example of how Suzanne and Margaret’s actions will have made a significant difference to the couple and their family at an extremely difficult time.
Tim Loudoun
Nominated by: anonymous
Deparment: Adult Social Care and Health
Reason for nomination:
We would like to nominate our much loved and respected colleague Tim Loudoun who recently passed away. Tim’s passing was a dreadful shock to his colleagues in the Derbyshire Dales and his loss is felt deeply across the team.
Tim successfully studied Social Work at the University of Lincoln and came to Derbyshire on placement in 2015. Tim secured a Newly Qualified Social Work position with Derbyshire Dales in 2015 and was recently working towards his grade 11. He remained working for Derbyshire Dales until his passing in January 2023.
Tim had many personal and professional qualities. Tim offered an encouraging and enduringly friendly presence within the team with a standout sense of humour. Tim was a warm and characterful person. He generously shared his kind, caring, open and honest nature with all that had the good fortunate to meet him. He was thoughtful, supportive, hardworking, and skilled at what he did.
Tim always had a positive attitude around his colleagues. He will be remembered for his willingness to always find the time for his team colleagues and students no matter how busy he may have been at the time; he would always be there for them providing guidance and support.
Tim was very passionate about his work with clients ensuring through person centred planning they were enabled to feel safe and supported in their own environments, and in control of their personal circumstances and aspirations.
Tim’s work with clients focussed on their strengths, he would regularly work alongside other professionals ensuring clients goals and outcomes were reached and linked them to support available within their local communities ensuring the Derbyshire pound was spent wisely.
Tim’s interest and skills were around Learning Disability and Transitions he always had the client at the heart of the assessment and ensured their voice was heard.
Tim leaves a loving wife and son aged only 10. We know that Tim’s son will be very proud of his dad for what he achieved and for the good person he was. Therefore, with his son and family in mind we would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Tim by posthumously thanking him for all that he did during his Social Work career helping to improve the lives of the people of Derbyshire Dales.
