Claiming tax relief for working from home

As many of you are working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, you may be able to claim tax relief for some of the bills you have to pay.

You can claim for activities related to work, for example, business telephone calls or the extra cost of gas and electricity. This excludes costs that would be the same whether or not you work at home, for example mortgage interest, rent, council tax, water rates or broadband. It also excludes expenses such as the cost of furniture or office equipment.

From 6 April 2020 you may be eligible to claim £6 a week tax relief to cover your additional costs.

Check if you are eligible to claim tax relief. You’ll need to set up a Government Gateway user ID to claim and reference the council’s PAYE number which you can find on your payslip.
