Dis-Ability Inclusion Network member Angie

Meet one of our Dis-Ability Inclusion Network members, Angie.

Angie

I've worked at Derbyshire County Council for about 3 years, having previously been in a variety of roles for both private industry and public bodies. Being a volunteer bingo caller for a local pensioner's group was probably one of the most challenging roles I have ever undertaken though!

Disabled Workers Group

I discovered the Disabled Workers Group (now Dis-Ability Inclusion Network) 2 years ago and enjoy meeting with other members who understand about working with a disability, especially when it's hidden.

Spinal injury

Five years ago, I had a spinal injury which severely impacted my mobility and also have fibromyalgia and diverticulitis, both hidden disabilities. I'm an independent soul who doesn't like asking for help, so for 3 years I was too proud to ask for a blue badge. However, being part of the network gave me the confidence to apply for one.

Remaining independent

The council were brilliant, and the application process was easy. A significant benefit is the fact that I can remain independent on bad days and it's all thanks to the network.

Another positive aspect of being part of it is being able to put forward an opinion about policy and input to positive change. Derbyshire are a good council to work for and I am very lucky to have supportive leaders who make reasonable adjustments, resulting in feeling valued and part of the team. It also means that my health is never put at risk by being asked to move heavy boxes during office moves etc. Not every employer is as supportive sadly, but the network is a place where we can talk about it and that really helps.

Equality has long been a passion of mine and it feels good to be part of a wider team who can influence decision-making. I also enjoy the guest speakers who come along to the meetings and the sense of camaraderie we share. Everyone is so supportive.

Outside work

Outside of work, I have a daughter, 2 stepsons and 2 beautiful granddaughters. I recently started working part time so that we can spend more time together and to pursue my hobbies, which include painting on glass, organic gardening, cooking healthy food and attending local pagan events.

Since January I have lost 2 and a half stone in weight, which has been hard work but quite gratifying and it has helped with some of the symptoms associated with my disabilities.

If you are disabled and feel that joining the network might be beneficial, I'd definitely recommend it. We're a friendly bunch and you'd get a very warm welcome!
