Take your child to work day

On a specific set day each year, secondary schools across Derbyshire have the option to promote a national 'take your child to work day'. This is typically aimed at students in year 7 and 8.

We support a wide range of work experience and placement opportunities, including this single day initiative.

If you are approached by your child and you want to support them, take the following steps.

Step 1

Read the information provided by the school so you know what they expect from you as the parent / guardian.

Step 2

Speak to your line manager. Firstly, to ensure the date in question is suitable so your request can be supported. Secondly, it means your manager has visibility in advance.

Step 3

Although we have public and employer's liability insurance, health and safety is our top priority when supporting this initiative. There are certain locations / roles where it is unsafe or unsuitable to bring your child into work, even if they are fully supervised.

For take your child to work day, we can only allow children into the workplace in the following areas:

  • office based roles at County Hall, Matlock
  • office based roles at other administrative buildings where there is no direct contact with adults or children in care or at a depot centre where machinery and large vehicles are accessible
  • libraries

Step 4

Based on the previous step, if you are eligible to bring your child into work, we need to have visibility of how many of our employees support this day, so we have a record that you are taking part.

Complete the take your child to work day form

This will include you receiving a copy of our work experience confidentiality agreement which you must read through.

Step 5

It's vital to plan ahead for the day itself:

  • make sure you are not working from home that day
  • map out what the day will look like including journey to and from work, breaks and lunch
  • set expectations, ensuring your child knows how to behave at your workplace
  • ensure they are dressed appropriately. Following the Council dress code will give them an opportunity to wear clothes similar to those they see on the day and lets them leave their school uniform at home
  • allow time to sign them in to your workplace location as a visitor for the day
  • take the time to give them a tour of your work location including evacuation meeting points and toilets
  • ensure appropriate tasks are identified to keep your child engaged
  • make sure you are with them and they are fully supervised for the full day
  • speak to your team members and identify who else is in the office that day so they can say hello to your child

Step 6

At the end of the day, spend some time asking your child about their experience, what they enjoyed and ask them if it was what they expected. Then provide any appropriate feedback to the school.

That's it!

There are no additional checks (for example, criminal record checks or references) or forms to complete.

Following these steps and creating a structured, supportive day for your child, will ensure they have a positive experience with us.
