Mentoring

Our focus is to develop leaders across the council so that they have the skills to engage, motivate and lead their teams to high performance.

Mentoring, coaching and reflective practice are all critical development approaches that facilitate a continuous learning environment and a high-performance culture.

Learn more about mentoring and the skills that underpin mentoring, coaching and reflective practice by accessing the mentoring e-book.

70-20-10 and mentoring

The 70-20-10 learning model is a valuable framework applied in our organisation.

The model suggests that:

  • 70% of learning occurs from on-the-job experiences e.g. applying reflective practices helps identify new and better ways of working
  • 20% from developmental relationships, for example, mentoring and coaching, and
  • 10% from formal coursework and training, for example, apprenticeships at Derbyshire including leadership apprenticeships

Mentoring and coaching are approaches integral to this model, forming a proportion of the ‘20%’ of learning that comes from interactions with others.

Performance Development Review (PDR) and mentoring

Performance management is also firmly linked with the 70-20-10 learning model. During the performance year development conversations are happening as part of the Performance Development Review (PDR) process and discussions about development can be documented in the personal development section of the PDR template.

Access the PDR guide e-book and review the development discussion guidance and PDR template relevant to you. Learn more about mentoring and the skills that underpin mentoring, coaching and reflective practice by accessing the mentoring e-book
