Employee engagement

Employee Engagement is about the involvement and enthusiasm of employees in their work. It’s where employees feel motivated, want to do their best, and feel like they’re part of something - not just showing up each day.

Our Internal Communications and Engagement Strategy sets out the approach we'll take to improving communication and engagement, and our Organisation Engagement Roadmap is how we’ll make this happen.

The strategy will support the delivery of our Council Plan and complements our People Strategy.

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach to get everyone engaged, but there are 4 things that are recognised as key to helping make work better for individuals, teams and the whole organisation:

  • 'Engaging managers' – who focus their people and give them scope, clearly defining what success looks like and empowering people to develop ideas; recognising people as individuals and coaching and providing regular feedback to develop high performing teams.
  • 'Employee voice' – Throughout the organisation our colleagues should work in an environment where they feel able to share their views, opinions, concerns and suggestions. They are involved, listened to and contribute suggestions which are central to solutions.
  • 'Strategic narrative' – we have a strong, clear story about where we've come from and where we're going. Our story will give a clear sense of direction and empower our people to take responsibility for delivering their part in our future.
  • 'Organisational Integrity' – we will have a clear vision and set of values that are reflected in the day-to-day behaviours of colleagues at all levels across the council. Our leaders will be honest with colleagues, provide opportunities for discussion and demonstrate how feedback has been taken into account.

Organisation Engagement Roadmap

Our Organisation Engagement Roadmap will help us deliver our Internal Communications and Engagement Strategy. It contains activities that drive improvement against our 4 enablers of engagement, to improve wider engagement across the council.
