Guidance for managers to support employees on pay protection

Guidance about the ways in which managers can support employees on pay protection.

Support arrangements for employees on pay protection

There are a number of reasons why employees are on pay protection:

  • organisational restructuring
  • redeployment into an alternative vacancy where the employee is at risk or under notice of redundancy
  • redeployment into a suitable alternative vacancy on ill health grounds
  • the introduction of a revised pay and grading system

We're committed to providing support to help employees achieve previous pay levels wherever possible. As a manager, you have a key role in supporting employees on pay protection.

Through one to one or My Plan discussions, consider career options that may be available to help achieve previous pay levels through training and career development.

Let them know about, and provide time off to attend, training events and activities to improve, for example, interviewing skills and completing job applications.

Support and training, including skills and personal development workshops are also available through the generic learning and development programmes.

The National Careers Service website provides information, advice and guidance to help you make decisions on learning, training and work opportunities.

You should assist employees where they would like to try out a different type of work by arranging job shadowing, work tasters and trial periods as appropriate. This may ultimately help them achieve their previous pay level.

If you're recruiting to a vacancy, employees on pay protection are entitled to a guaranteed interview for jobs at the same grade or below.

If one of your employees on pay protection moves to a different job, find out if their pay protection can be continued in the new job (portable pay protection), where this may be appropriate.

Our early careers and work experience section includes more information about career opportunities across our range of services.

When considering different career options, information about many of our different types of jobs can be found on the job families section. Job family role profiles describe the typical responsibilities, knowledge, skills and experience required for jobs at each level of a job family and the map of grades across job families.

Employees may find it useful to access information about careers in local government on the local government jobs website, or for careers in care via the skills for care website.

You may also wish to remind employees of the confidential counselling service that is available on tel: 01629 536954.

Signposting to independent financial advice is available through Money Helper.

Financial planning advice is also provided through an external provider and arrangements should be made via ext: 36939.
