Continuing professional development

Continuing professional development (CPD) is a process which enables you to maintain and develop relevant skills and knowledge throughout your career.

Finance

CPD has become a mandatory requirement for many of the accounting and financial bodies.

The information on this page provides details and guidance for employees who are required to undertake CPD.

The CPD guidelines attached to this page explain what is expected from you.

There will also be articles which you may find of interest, particularly about accounting practices and updates regarding financial reporting standards.

CPD events are held by the accounting bodies and cover a range of topics. CPD events can count towards CPD hours. Therefore we'll consider arranging any events if there is sufficient interest in the topic.

If you'd like to see a particular topic for a CPD event, please contact Eleanor Scriven, email eleanor.scriven@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Any CPD events arranged by us will be published on this page and the details will be emailed to anyone interested.

Occupational therapy

There are a range of documents that are relevant to occupational therapy CPD attached to this page.

If you have any queries, please contact Avril Robinson, email avril.robinson@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Social work

Social workers are employed on grades 9 to 11. The guidance includes information for how to progress from grade 9 to 10 and from grade 10 to11. It comes into effect for all portfolio submissions from March 2022.

For those familiar with the previous progression guidance, the main changes are:

  1. The removal of the requirement to attend a progression meeting or interview for those who have successfully passed their ASYE portfolio and included a line manager's statement supporting their progression from grade 9 to 10.
  2. The inclusion of one direct observation in the portfolio requirements for progression from grade 10 to 11 (a template is included in the guidance). The progression meeting remains in place for those progressing from grade 10 to 11.

The relevant documents are attached to this page. If you have any queries please contact Vanessa Ward, email vanessa.ward@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Social worker progression grade 10 to 11

Social worker produces progression portfolio following guidance contained within progression guidance for social workers and direct observation pro forma social work progression from grade 10 to11 (attached to this page).

Social worker submits progression portfolio via email to Vanessa Ward, email vanessa.ward@derbyshire.gov.uk and Fiona Musselwhite, email fiona.musselwhite@derbyshire.gov.uk on or before their preferred submission date (either 15 January, 15 May or 15 September each year).

The progression portfolio is quality assured by a representative of the learning and development team and the principal social worker. This process will include contact with the relevant group manager to confirm they support the social worker's progression. If progression is not supported by the croup manager then contact will be made with the social worker to advise them of this and actions required prior to a progression validation meeting being arranged are agreed.

A progression validation meeting will be arranged at a mutually convenient time and will include the group manager, principal social worker (PSW) (or a representative from the learning and development team) and the social worker. The progression meeting can be held virtually via MS Teams or, if preferred by any party, in person.

The line manager may also attend should any party wish them to be there. The line managers attendance is optional as they have already submitted a written recommendation to support progression.

The progression meeting will consist of a peer discussion framed around a series of questions to validate the portfolio content. The social worker is present throughout the meeting. The group manager and PSW or learning and development rep will record brief notes of the responses given on relevant progression documentation.

The social worker is encouraged to share their case examples, practice experiences and any ideas they may have for practice improvements.

Progression may not be validated if a change in the social worker circumstances has occurred which may influence validation of progression. This may include for example:

  • changes to Social Work England registration
  • capability and / or fitness to practice concerns arising
  • content which raises concerns disclosed during the progression validation meeting

Within the meeting, the social worker will be advised by the group manager of whether their progression is approved.

Recommended date for progression will be confirmed. This is generally the date of submission of the portfolio.

Following the meeting, relevant documentation will be signed by the group manager and PSW or learning and development colleague.

PSW forwards signed documentation to pay@derbyshire.gov.uk to request pay grade is adjusted. Manager completes SAP variation request.
